Storage conditions
Storage and stability matrix
Typical stability windows for research peptides under common laboratory storage conditions. Treat as a starting reference; validate stability against your specific peptide and storage practice.
- Recommended
Lyophilized
Temperature−20°C (frozen)StabilityUp to ~5 yearsNotesLong-term archival storage. Most stable condition for most lyophilized research peptides. - Recommended
Lyophilized
Temperature2–8°C (refrigerated)Stability~2–3 yearsNotesStandard working storage. Protect from light. Typical default for most research labs. - Short-term only
Lyophilized
TemperatureRoom temperature (~20°C)StabilityDays to weeksNotesAcceptable only for short shipping transit. Move to refrigerated storage on arrival. - Recommended
Reconstituted
Temperature−20°C (frozen, aliquoted)StabilityUp to ~6 monthsNotesFor long-term storage of reconstituted solution. Aliquot into single-use volumes to avoid freeze–thaw cycles. Avoid repeated thaws. - Working storage
Reconstituted
Temperature2–8°C (refrigerated)Stability~30 daysNotesStandard working window for reconstituted peptide. Bacteriostatic water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol slows microbial growth. - Short-term only
Reconstituted
TemperatureRoom temperature (~20°C)StabilityHours to a few daysNotesUnstable. Use only for the duration of an active experiment. Return to refrigeration immediately.

Best-practice storage rules
- Protect from light. Even refrigerated vials degrade faster under direct light. Store in opaque containers or in the dark.
- Avoid temperature cycling. Repeated refrigerator door openings shorten effective shelf life. Position long-term stock at the back, working vials toward the front.
- Aliquot before freezing. Single-use volumes limit each freeze–thaw cycle to one aliquot, preserving the rest of the stock at full activity.
- Use bacteriostatic water for reconstitution. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol content extends the working storage window at 2–8°C.
- Label every vial. Date of reconstitution, concentration, vial mass, and batch number. Required for any downstream lab record.
- Inspect before use. Reject vials with damaged seals, liquefied or shrunken cake, or visible contamination.
FAQ
Storage and stability FAQ
How long do lyophilized peptides last in a refrigerator at 2–8°C?
Properly stored lyophilized peptides typically remain stable for 2–3 years at 2–8°C, protected from light and moisture. Frozen at −20°C, the shelf life extends to approximately 5 years for most research peptides.
How long can reconstituted peptide be stored at 2–8°C?
Most reconstituted peptides remain stable for approximately 30 days at 2–8°C when reconstituted with bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol). For longer storage, aliquot the reconstituted solution into single-use volumes and freeze at −20°C.
Why aliquot reconstituted peptide before freezing?
Repeated freeze–thaw cycles degrade peptide structure and reduce activity. Aliquoting into single-use volumes means each thaw exposes only one portion of the solution to the freeze–thaw cycle, preserving the rest of the stock at full activity.
Can I leave a vial at room temperature?
Lyophilized vials tolerate short room-temperature exposure during shipping (days to weeks). Reconstituted peptide should not be left at room temperature beyond the duration of an active experimental session; return to refrigeration immediately.
What does bacteriostatic water do?
Bacteriostatic water (sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol) inhibits bacterial growth in reconstituted research solutions, extending the working storage window at 2–8°C from days to approximately 30 days for most peptides.
Is this storage advice?
This is a laboratory storage reference for research use only. Specific stability depends on the peptide sequence, the formulation, and your storage practice. Validate stability in your own lab before relying on it for experimental work.
